Project Overview
The Kiewit Hall Garage Project is all about enhancing the workshop experience for engineering students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Originally, UNL developed the Studio Manager to help manage a community-focused workshop. Now, we’re taking that foundation and expanding it to make Kiewit Hall Garage the go-to place for hands-on learning and project work.
This project aims to create a top-notch, student-centered workspace that doesn’t just support projects but truly empowers students to dive into hands-on learning with all the tools and resources they need.
Here’s what we’re working to achieve:
- Better Support for Student Projects: By adding features to the Studio Manager, we’re making it easier for students to get the resources and help they need, right when they need it.
- Secure and Organized Storage: We’re building a system that keeps student projects safe and organized, so they don’t have to worry about losing or misplacing their work.
- Real-Time Data Tracking and Reporting: With new data analysis tools, we’ll be able to monitor project usage and provide reporting for grants, helping the university understand how resources are used.
We’re focusing on a few key areas to make this vision a reality. Each area requires some exploration to get the system working as smoothly as possible:
- Hardware Integration: This includes adding equipment like barcode scanners to easily track student NCards and simplify equipment check-in and check-out.
- Security Compliance: We’re working to meet UNL’s security standards, especially when it comes to communicating with devices like 3D printers, ensuring everything is secure.
- System Integration with UNL Tools: The project will integrate with UNL’s existing tools, like pulling user data from @huskers.unl.edu accounts, to streamline the login and user management process.
Our ultimate goal is to improve the day-to-day experience of students in the College of Engineering. With these upgrades, students will have:
- A modern, efficient workspace where they can access equipment and resources quickly.
- A safe place to store projects and manage their work securely.
- Insights from data tracking to help them better understand their project use and resources.
In the long run, we envision Kiewit Hall Garage as a hub of student innovation. By making it easy for students to access resources, manage their projects, and learn by doing, we’re creating a space where engineering students can grow their skills and tackle real-world challenges. This project is a key step in transforming UNL’s College of Engineering into a hands-on, innovation-driven learning environment.
