Description

Replaces row distribution logic with a column count calculation for rendering social buttons. Removes unused Grid component and deletes distributeStrategiesIntoRows utility, simplifying the layout implementation.

Since all of the items are in a single flex container. They can move an item in the second row, into the first row with using CSS order property.

In the following example, Hubspot by default is the last item it the social buttons. Using order: -1 I can move it to the first item. The top SocialButtons shows the flex implementation, and the bottom is the current where you can see Hubspot only moves to the first item in the second row.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes refactor the SocialButtons component by replacing its grid-based layout and row distribution logic with a flexbox-based approach. The previous utility function for distributing strategies into rows and its associated constants are removed. Instead, a new helper calculates the number of columns, and CSS custom properties are used to control the flex layout, ensuring responsive and consistent button sizing. The rendering logic is simplified from a nested map over rows and strategies to a single map over all strategies. The Grid component and related imports are eliminated, and the now-unused utility file is deleted. Additionally, the buttons are reordered using CSS order properties within a single flex container to allow more flexible styling and positioning.

49-188: Consider adding tests for this layout refactoring.

This is a well-executed refactoring that significantly simplifies the component while maintaining functionality. However, since it changes core layout logic, consider adding visual regression tests or component tests to ensure the flexbox layout behaves correctly across different:

  • Numbers of social providers (1, 2, 5, 8, 12+ strategies)
  • Screen sizes (responsive behavior)
  • Button variants (block vs icon)

The refactoring itself looks solid, but test coverage would provide confidence that the layout changes don't introduce visual regressions.

🧹 Nitpick comments (2)
packages/clerk-js/src/ui/elements/SocialButtons.tsx (2)

49-52: Add JSDoc documentation and explicit return type.

The function logic is correct, but it lacks proper documentation and explicit typing per the coding guidelines.

+/**
+ * Calculates the optimal number of columns for a grid layout
+ * @param itemsLength - Total number of items to display
+ * @param maxCols - Maximum number of columns allowed (default: 6)
+ * @returns The optimal number of columns
+ */
-function getColumnCount(itemsLength: number, maxCols: number = 6): number {
+function getColumnCount(itemsLength: number, maxCols: number = 6): number {

122-140: Add explanatory comment for complex calc formula.

The flexbox implementation with CSS custom properties is well-designed and responsive. However, the calc formula for --item-width is complex and would benefit from documentation.

          '--columns': columns,
          '--gap': t.space.$2,
+ // Calculate item width: (100% / columns) - (gap per item considering total gaps)
          '--item-width': `calc(100% / var(--columns) - var(--gap) / var(--columns) * (var(--columns) - 1))`,

141-187: Excellent simplification of rendering logic.

The refactoring successfully eliminates the nested loop structure while maintaining all existing functionality. The single map over strategies with flexbox handling the layout is much cleaner and easier to understand.

75-75: Good use of memoization for performance.

The useMemo usage is appropriate here, correctly memoizing the column calculation based on strategies length and preventing unnecessary recalculations.

Eliminates the marginBottom style from the SocialButtons container for improved layout control. Also refactors localization key argument formatting for consistency.
