I'm wondering why is this project using GPL. Any project using this would be subject to copyleft. Is this intended? Is there any possibility of relicensing?

I am not sure if its possible to change license now unless we rewrite it.

Well, you could ask original author if he was willing to relicense it. GPL feels very off within dart ecosystem.
