Improve date fields

• I have read the Wiki, searched the open issues, and still think this is a new feature.

Explain the problem clearly and succinctly:

When editing a date field, the calendar always defaults to today.

Describe the solution you'd like:

It would make much more sense if it would default to whatever date is currently in the field, or today if field is empty.
